On 6th April, at the Bay Arena in Herne Bay, Kent Roller Girls – the county’s only official WFTDA roller derby league – took on the London Rockin Rollers, and the KRG All-Stars proved their credentials as one of the South-East’s highest-ranking derby teams. Remaining undefeated this year, they hosted an exciting showcase of athletic skill and roller-skating prowess which also featured their B-team who continue to prove tough to defeat on track.

Roller Derby is a full contact sport, played on roller skates. Its origin in 1950’s choreographed bouts is a far cry from the sport as it is today, which pits two teams against each other in an athletic, energetic battle of strength and strategy in a spectacle that’s not to be missed. The aim of the game is for the ‘jammer’, wearing a star on their helmet, to gain points by passing the ‘blockers’ on the other team. The job of the blockers? Well, that should be obvious! Want to see it for yourself? You’re in luck!

On the 16th of February, Kent Roller Girls will be taking on Cambridge Rollerbillies at the Bay Sports Arena. The last time these two teams met to play competitively was 2015 at the British Championships.
Roller Derby is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, with new leagues forming all over the globe. A full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, this sport was revived in its current format in the 2000s, when a female-led grassroots movement of teams with a DIY ethos started appearing in the USA.

Kent Roller Girls will be taking on the Portsmouth Roller Wenches on the 26th of May at the Herne Bay Arena. Roller derby is an aggressive, fast paced, full contact sport played on roller skates and this game looks to be a close match, with the two teams having faced each other on track several times over the years and being very close on the European rankings. The photos on this page are from the last time we invited the Wenches to our home at the Bay.

We started the year with a trip to Paris to play La Boucherie de Paris Rollergirls. A very early 4am start and a drive through Northern France to Paris did not lead to us playing our best roller derby. We tried to instigate some new tactics, but in the end we were outclassed by a very talented Paris team. This lead to the start of our British Championships T2 season. We were drawn in the Southern division meaning we would be taking on an incredibly strong tier of teams, Windsor Roller Girls. London Rockin’ Rollers, South West Angels of Terror, Swansea City Roller Girls and Big Bucks High Rollers, all in all we were very much underdogs in this tier.
